Traditional versus Modern Weddings
" Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something blue "
Every bride, every mother of the bride, basically every woman knows this saying. It has come down through the ages and is passed on as part of the wedding ritual. Whether the happy couple chooses a traditional wedding and reception steeped in customs or a modern wedding performed with personal tastes, the age-old expression agrees that all weddings are a combination of old fashioned ways and modern day trends.
As the bride prepares for her wedding day, she will use the saying as a checklist. She knows that for the good health, well being and prosperity of herself and her intended, they must include, the "old, new, borrowed and blue". In fact, her family and bridesmaids will help her to make sure she has collected all four pieces.
When the couple chooses a vintage wedding, it will be easy to satisfy the "something old". The bride's antique wedding gown may have been passed on from her great grandmother or great aunt. Or she might choose a new gown that resembles a long-gone era while wearing jewelry of that era handed down from a family member.
Fulfilling the "something new" part of the saying is probably the least complicated as anything can be considered new. The bride's gown, the veil, the gloves but remember that "new" can also denote a new tradition. The bride and groom may decide to follow a trend they have seen in the magazines which is becoming tradition as more and more couples follow the trend. An example would be personalized wedding vows. Many couples are moving away from the time-honored vows to more modern and personal vows. Companies and copywriters even exist now to help couples write the perfect vows.

Something borrowed is usually a piece of jewelry a friend or family member has provided. A string of pearls for example or diamond earrings are lovely borrowed items that also save the bride from spending outside her budget. A pretty handbag is a nice borrowed item for the bride to carry and it is functional as well since she requires a bag to carry her personal items for the day.
Something blue is usually found in the pretty lace hanky or garter belt. The bride may pin her lace handkerchief to her waist or carry it in her purse. If she chooses or one of her bridesmaids buys the garter as a gift, it will most certainly have some blue around the intricate detailing.
As times change and society moves forward, new wedding traditions are formed and older ones are updated or discarded. The wedding day is ultimately a personal expression of the bride and groom coupled with their families' beliefs and heritage. We can still see, however, that in almost all weddings, the bride still chooses to adhere to the "new, old, borrowed, blue" expression. She will not tempt fate.
Even in cases where the wedding ceremony is not performed in the church and may even be a Las Vegas style "quick" wedding or a civil ceremony with no pomp and circumstance, the bride will still try to follow tradition. No matter how meager her budget, this is saying or tradition that prevails.
