Fine lingerie is something that makes a woman feel special. Having that silky, satin feeling next to the skin gives any woman a radiant feeling while at the same time creates curiosity or excitement for her "other half". And the wedding day or night is the perfect time to create the mood with lovely undergarments.
Indeed, the use of properly fitted undergarments serves a functional purpose. As stated in our Wedding Gown article, the dress flows more elegantly and looks many times more beautiful with undergarments that have been chosen for the dress itself and also to fit the bride's body.
When choosing your wedding lingerie:
First, buy lingerie that fits your body. Have yourself properly measured by a professional and purchase the correct sizes.
Purchase cup sizes that are made to support you. Buying a bra, bustier or corset that is too small will cause spillage and spoil the look of your gown. Likewise cup sizes that are too big with no filling will create bulges and lines in your dress material
If you require slimming apparel, which has replaced the old type girdle, choose garments made from Lycra or Spandex. These materials tend to hug the body, keeping it firm while not loosing the form of the apparel itself. They bounce back into shape.
Second, choose undergarments that look best with the gown. For example, if the gown is strapless, a bra or corset with permanent straps will not work. If you can, take along a picture of your wedding dress so that you can choose appropriate lingerie. And make sure your wedding gown fitting is completed while wearing the lingerie.
Third, choose lingerie that will make you feel good. Find things that make you feel sexy and items that you might want to use on your wedding night. Look for matching items that can be used with what you buy. For example, if you purchase a bustier to go under your wedding gown, find a sheer robe to go over top to wear on your wedding night. The bustier or corset will look more sensual peeking out from underneath the sheer fabric of the robe.
Helpful Points when Wearing Wedding Day (and Night) Lingerie
Rub petroleum jelly or cream on foot heels or other hard surfaces of the foot before putting on stockings. This will reduce snags and keep the stockings new looking.
Choose between stockings and a garter belt or panty hose with underwear sewn in. The stockings and garter belt will dual as wedding night apparel. Coupled with a marabou or feather boa, you will have the ingredients for a delightful evening.
Purchase panty hose that will be comfortable for the whole day. The tummy area should not be too tight and the crotch should be long enough to sit down without ripping the stockings.

If you choose to wear a crotchless or bottomless corset, pearl thongs or a peekaboo shelf bra under your wedding gown, be sure that the gown is not see-through. You and your intended may be anticipating your wedding night but your guests may not be as interested in seeing your derriere or your breasts. Be discreet in what you choose to wear under the wedding gown.
Purchase mix and match pieces. The pieces do not have to come from the same collection or even the same store. You can buy pieces that are appropriate to wear under your gown, then add other pieces that spice up the outfit for the evening.
After you have chosen your lingerie, think about ways to use it on the wedding night. For most couples the night is really about enjoying one's company as an officially married couple. Many people are marrying older in age and may have lived together for some time before the wedding. Due to many facts in today's society, the wedding night does not hold the same connotations as it did fifty years ago. In most cases, the bride and groom already know each other intimately and expect other things from the wedding night.
The wedding night can be a time to relax and get away from the madness of all the wedding planning. It is a special night just for the two of you and can be a time to let down your hair and release all that pent up stress and anxiety from the last year or two of planning. Some couples look forward to a romantic evening with candles and spa treats. A luxuriously scented soak in a honeymoon bath for two, a bottle of champagne or sparkling water in a private hot tub or even listening to soft music and lying together are all examples of wonderfully romantic wedding nights.
And do not forget to ask the hotel or wedding night location to help you with your perfect wedding night. By letting them know in advance, they may add things such as champagne, fruit and chocolate to your room. If requested, they may even lay out beautifully scented rose petals on your bed to make this special evening perfect.
