The Wedding Master of Ceremonies MC

Choosing a Master of Ceremonies

While many people believe that the Master of Ceremonies and the Disc Jockey are one in the same, this simply is not true. In fact, by the very definition of each role, one can see that these are two separate functions to be carried out by two distinct people. Plain and simple, a DJ is not necessarily a talker and an MC is not necessarily a music buff.

Master of Ceremony

The Master of Ceremonies is the person who guides the reception and keeps things moving along and organized. The MC must know at least one member of the wedding couple and should be able to speak in public. The MC can be witty and humorous and should be able to relate to a large group of people. He or she should be able to speak comfortably about the bride and groom and feel like he is in charge of the proceedings.

The Master of Ceremony must be organized and prepared. A list of the order of events is important so he/she should follow etiquette as well as speak with the bride and groom days or weeks before the wedding to determine any special order of events and any specific events that will be happening and need announcing.

When the MC arrives at the reception hall, he/she should check to make sure the microphone is in working order and set it so that it works for him/her specifically. In advance, he should practice the names of the people who he must announce and know the relationships of the people to the bride and groom.

He/she must also be able to change direction if necessary and get the proceedings back on track. For example, if someone not listed in the events stands up and says they want to say a few words, the MC needs to be flexible and work that event into the schedule. People will unexpectedly jump in so the MC needs to remain calm and "go with the flow". In addition, he/she must also know when to get things back on track politely but firmly giving instructions to the guests.

Specific Duties of the Master of Ceremonies

  • keep things running smoothly and on time

  • get everyone lined up in the receiving line in proper order

  • get people seated for the bridal entrance and direct guests to any special seating

  • moving from cocktails to dinner - having people get settled and seated

  • entrance of the wedding party, couple and parents into the reception hall

  • welcome people to reception and introduce them to the bride and groom

  • introduce the parents of the bride and groom

  • announce the wedding party

  • announce and introduce guests

  • announce serving of dinner

  • introduce person saying grace

  • announce the toasts

  • the first dance and official dances

  • cutting the wedding cake

  • throwing of the bouquet and garter

  • announce the departure for honeymoon

  • let people know that DJ is leaving and reception more or less over
