Choosing the Disc Jockey

Choosing the Disc Jockey
As we have previously indicated, the master of ceremony and the disc jockey are not the same person. In fact in most instances, the DJ is a hired person who may or may not even know the bridal couple. The MC is usually a close friend or relative of the couple and performs the service as a privilege and not a paid service.
The process of choosing a disc jockey is much the same as hiring the other wedding vendors. An interview should be set up and questions asked to determine whether the person offers the type of music that you prefer. Find out if the person with whom you have met is the actual DJ and whether he will be playing at your wedding or sending someone else.
One of the most important factors to remember about hiring a DJ, is that he/she is the entertainment and will be performing for about four to five hours. If he does not play the kind of music to keep your crowd occupied, you and your guests will be disappointed with the dance and the reception.

Some questions to ask when interviewing potential disc jockeys:
type of music he plays including a list of wedding music
suggestions for the first dance if you do not have the piece already chosen
how much room does he require - has he worked in your chosen venue and is it acceptable for his equipment
the DJ should be offered a meal but ask whether he would like to eat or not because you must add this to your meal count for the caterer
if the person meeting with you is not the DJ, make sure the person who will actually DJs is of a mature age
inquire about video taping - whether taping or pictures of the DJ is permitted
the contract should include terms such as:
the time, date and location of the wedding
how many hours disc jockey is required to play
if the event goes over the written agreement and DJ chooses to stay, how will the overtime be billed - the exact details including rate must be listed
who will be the DJ - the name of the exact DJ and the company

specific details of what will happen in the event that the DJ does not show up
specifics about video taping and pictures
any liability for which you are responsible
if the venue is outside, the necessary accessories for the DJ to perform - tent, tarp
the space required for the DJ to comfortably set up equipment
whether he is required to wear a tuxedo and who will pay for the rental
