Choosing the wedding date

Picking the Wedding Date

Probably the first decision to be made after the engagement has been announced is the actual date of the wedding. Some couples opt for a short engagement while others may decide to wait a year or two before holding the wedding. While it is personal preference what date to choose, many other factors influence the wedding date decision.

1. Living in a city with inclement weather, the best times of the year for a wedding might be late spring, summer or early fall. Although, it may be easier to book locations in the winter, some people feel that a winter wedding is a burden with the snow and slush and the need to wear coats and boots.

Winter is also an added expense on the couple, as the bride will require extra garments in her ensemble. The bride, the bridesmaids and flower girls will all require fancy coats or capes to keep them warm. In addition, they will be limited in the shoes they may wear since they will all need closed style shoes. They may even have to purchase two pair of shoes - one for outside and the other pair for the reception hall.

2. Although the wedding is the bride and groom's day, most couples will try to choose days that are convenient for their guests. Particularly those guests that must travel from out of town or out of state. If a favorite aunt and uncle can only take time off during a specific period, the couple may choose that time to hold their wedding.

3.Some couples choose a day that is significant and important to them in some way. For instance, the anniversary of their meeting, the anniversary of their engagement or maybe the birthday of the bride.

4. While it is unfortunate, but some couples must choose their wedding date specifically on when the hall or church has available dates. In many cities, halls and churches are booked up for years to come. It is not uncommon to choose a location only to find out that the first available Saturday is two years from now.

5. Religion is one of the main factors in choosing a wedding date. Saturday was usually the most popular day for a wedding since people were not at work on the weekends and it gave the guests Sunday to rest. But for many religions, other days of the week such as Friday and Sunday are more acceptable for their weddings.

6. Education or a job promotion may be reasons to wait until later to hold the wedding. Both the bride and the groom may be in a university and may wish to complete their degrees before taking on the task of planning a wedding. Likewise, if one of the couple is newly employed, the couple may wait until it is more acceptable to take time off work.

7. Saving for the wedding and even a down payment on a house may factor into choosing a wedding date. Couples who are paying for their own wedding may choose to work longer before getting married in order to save the funds for the wedding. Others may wish to save more for a down payment on a house so they can move in together after the wedding.

8. A wedding on an exotic island or out of town may require some advance booking. Should the couple decide to accommodate their parents and witnesses, they may book the wedding date around the flight availabilities and also discounts offered by the airlines and resort.

9. The theme of the wedding may help to choose the date as well. The time of year may add to the ambience of the chosen theme.

While the couple may rightly choose any date they wish for their wedding, there are some days or times of the year that are not advisable:

Do Not Choose:

1.Holidays such as Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. Churches and halls will all be booked because of special religious services and parties. Also, travelling during those times of the year will be more expensive and extremely busy causing unnecessary anxiety for the guests.

2. Proms and graduations may also pose a problem in booking a hall so try to avoid these weekends.

3. Some people are keen on sports and choosing the weekend of the Super Bowl may not be a good idea. Keep major sports events in mind when booking a wedding date. Lastly, the key to booking a desired wedding date is to start early. Once you are engaged, make inquiries about the open dates at halls and churches and lock in your preferred date.
