Bacholer and bacholerette Party Overview

Overview of the Bachelor and Bachelorette Party

Everyone loves a good time. And future grooms have been partying the night before their wedding for so many years that the women have finally said, that they want a piece of the action, too. Enter the Bachelorette Party.

Whether you are the groom who is the guest of honor at a bachelor party, more commonly known as the "stag", or you are the bride who is the female guest of honor at the bachorlorette party, both parties are meant to be your symbolic last night of freedom. It is the night when you party hardy and pay for your sins the next day.

Traditionally, the male stag party was the night before the wedding. But now for many reasons, the party is probably held on another night to avoid conflict with the rehearsal party and dinner.

  • Many stag parties are large events set up at a local hall and the men buy tickets to attend the stag. They usually buy their own drinks but food is provided and their tickets become entries in the draws for the door prizes. Whatever is left over from the earnings after expenses are paid goes to the bride and groom. The best man or a close relative of the groom usually plans this type of stag. All males are invited from both the groom's and bride's sides of the families. When tickets are sold, anyone who wants to contribute can purchase a ticket. Work and club associates who may only know the groom briefly will purchase tickets for a night out.
  • Bachelor parties are diverse and the groom may even receive more than one. Some of the closer guys in a group may decide to make it a weekend event going on a short ski vacation or even a gambling trip. This type of gathering would be reserved for the groom's closest buddies.
  • Another reason the stag party may not be held on the night before the wedding is if the guys plan for it to be an all-night affair, it might not be too good to show up at the wedding drunk. Also, if the rehearsal is held the same night, then the men have to excuse themselves to go to the stag.

Customarily the bride had showers thrown in her honor but as traditions change, some brides' friends started throwing bachelorette parties, too. These are quite a bit different than a bridal shower, as the party may be a little raunchy and not appropriate for all female members of the family. Thus, the girls take the bride out for once last fling. But like her male counterparts, the party does not need to reek of strippers and booze. Some of the things that girls are doing for bachelorette parties are:

  • Holding a spa day where the maid of honor or close friend reserves the facility for the group. They might have a massage, a manicure and a pedicure all together.
  • An evening of fondue and games. If the bride is a chocolate lover, then cut up pieces of fruit and bread and plunge into different kinds of melted chocolate. The bride will delight in something so decadent. Look around the internet for ideas on little games to hold to make the evening fun.
  • A wine and cheese is nice as well. Ask each girl to bring her cheese of choice, crackers and a bottle of wine or sparkling water. Maybe dress in pajamas or lingerie and make it a slumber party.

A Couple last Points on Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties
  • Choose something that is appropriate to the person of honor. If the bride is religious, holding a party with strippers and alcohol will not be acceptable. Further, the bride or groom must be comfortable with the event. Make the event meaningful.
  • In order to choose a night; ask the bride or groom which nights he or she is available. You may also ask what the bride or groom might like to do. This can help with the theme of the party.
  • If the bride or groom must book time off work for a weekend, let him/her know well in advance so he/she can make the necessary arrangements.
  • If drinking is involved, make sure there are designated drivers or arrangements have been made for cabs or another form of transportation.
  • Decide on who is paying for what in advance.
  • If the bachelor party planned is a stag where tickets are sold, have the tickets printed early and book the location. Talk to many family members and friends about selling the tickets so the hall can be filled.
  • The parties are really best held about a month or six weeks before the wedding. Holding the events too close to the wedding day actually makes it more stressful for many people.
