Detroit Masonic Temple

The Detroit Masonic Temple located in Detroit michigan opened in 1896, the Masonic Temple attracted so many people that it actually became over crowded just 12 years after it opened, they planned on purchasing an additional 50 feet to help relieve the swelling crowds, but decided it wouldn't be good enough and decided to build another much larger Temple. They planned and on September 18, 1922 the first corner stone was layed. it opened around thanksgiving 1926 as the largest building of its kind.

Facts
The original plans for the Masonic Temple had the temple in the shape of a hammer, they changed the plans after obtaining another 50 foot of frontage.
Some previous features of the temple that no longer exist or function include - 15 lane bowling alley, 3 chair barber shop, Shoe shine parlor, Cigar,candy and souvenir stand, Indoor swimming pool, Bakery, Billiards room, Roof-top garden and a

Detroit's Masonic Temple is the largest Masonic Temple in the world
The Masonic temple had a third theatre planned on the 7th floor, had it been completed, it would have been the only place in the world with 3 theatres under one roof.
The first steel structure of the Temple was lifted into place at exactly 12 noon on 4/22/1922, and the total weight of the structural steel of the temple equals 16,000,000lbs.
About 3,850,000 bricks were used for the walls and partitions.
