Historic Fort Wayne detroit michigan

Historic Fort Wayne

Historic Fort Wayne located in detroit michigan was built in 1845 as a result of some tensions with britian (now Canada) the fort was named after General 'Mad Anthony' Wayne whose defeat of the British at Fallen Timbers in 1796 resulted in the United States occupation of the Northwest Territories.

The forts cannons never did fire a single shot as the tensions were resolved, the fort was used for various operations up to the vietnam war.

Parts of the fort were given to the City of Detroit in starting in 1948. Over the next 28 years, Detroit would come to own the entire reservation with the exception of nine acres still used by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Still standing at the old fort are the original 1848 limestone barracks building, the 1845 Star Fort which was renovated in 1861, the restored Commanding Officers House and Spanish American War Guardhouse, two large parade grounds, several Officers houses and support buildings built between the 1880s and 1940s, and a indian burial mound constructed by the indians that is nearly 1000 years old.

Also located just inside the front gate just to the right is a museum for the Tuscagee Airmen which happens to be the best building on the fort today, many of the buildings in the fort are in need of repair, more information about this can be found Here.
